GENERAL INFORMATION

Schlage does not sell direct to the public, however, you can find a local New Zealand reseller here.

Schlage is a part of the Allegion family of brands, located in Avondale, Auckland, where we have our New Zealand head office, warehouse, and factory.

Our products are sourced to an Allegion specification, in a variety of locations such as New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, China and the United States. With a new local factory and warehouse in Auckland New Zealand, some of our products are manufactured and tested locally.

Schlage are proud to stand behind our products which have been crafted to the highest quality. Each product range has a warranty period between 2 - 25 years depending on the product type.

You can find the warranty information on the individual product page or under the warranty section here.

Schlage products purchased within New Zealand which are no longer required should be returned to the retailer the product was purchased from. Your local retailer will guide you through the process of a refund, provided the product is free of defects and meets their conditions of return. For warranty claims, please refer to our warranty section.

Click here to read our Hardware 101 A-Z glossary for information about latches, functions and more.

A latch is the mechanism that slides into the edge of the door and retracts or protrudes with the turn of the doorknob or lever. The latch keeps the door closed and allows it to open.

A backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the hole for your doorknob or lever.

A strike plate is the metal piece attached to the door jamb – part of the door frame. As the door closes, the latch mechanism strikes the plate mounted to the jamb and the strike plate catches the mechanism and holds the door closed.

Handing describes the side of the door the hinges are on when the door is opening towards you. To determine the handing you need, always stand outside of the door.

1 - If the hinges are on the left-hand side, you will need to order a right-hand dummy set.

2 - If the hinges are on the right-hand side, you will need to order a left-hand dummy set.

Most of our levers are non-handed which means they can be installed on both sides.

Each Schlage product has a required door thickness for installation. If you try to install a product on a door with the wrong thickness, it will not connect properly with the latch and the product will not work. Most of our products can be installed on a door of 35-40mm.

A keyed deadbolt or digital deadbolt is recommended for exterior doors. We have two keyed deadbolt options available - single and double cylinder. A single cylinder has a keyed cylinder on the exterior and a turn on the interior side. A double cylinder has a keyed cylinder on the interior and exterior sides of the door. An electronic deadbolt does come with a backup mechanical key, however saves the hassle of remembering your keys and has multiple secure ways of keyless entry.

You can check out our range of deadbolts here.

We recommend using the highest quality products to sustain the harsh impacts of sea salt damage to your door hardware. We would recommend purchasing marine grade 316L stainless steel products such as our Schlage pull handles for the front door, or Schlage Form Series which will withstand the harshest environments.

Our Schlage smart locks have been designed and tested to withstand all elements! Our Schlage Encode™ Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt is graded best in security, durability and finish (AAA). Each of our Schlage smart locks contain built-in alarm technology to sense potential security breaches at the lock and Schlage Ease Smart Locks contain a random PIN number function to protect your entry code. The addition of Schlage apps such as the Schlage Home and Schlage Abode app allow the homeowner to see when the lock is accessed whenever and wherever they are.

If you are building a new home, an on-site carpenter or builder can install our products. If you are buying a smart lock, we recommend send the drilling template to your door company and they can predrill the requirements.

If you are replacing your door hardware, you can request assistance from your local locksmith, or review our simple instructions within each Schlage box for DIY retrofit.

You will need a drill with applicable spade bits and a hole saw, hammer, chisel and the door hardware jig or template.

Don’t forget the DIY staples: tape measure, pencil, screwdriver, safety glasses and earmuffs.

SMART LOCKS | SCHLAGE ENCODE

The Schlage Encode is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

First, check the measurements of your door preparation. If the deadbolt bore hole measures 38mm, you will need to remove the hole adapter, or simply widen your bore hole to 54mm.

First you need to enter the programming code (6 digits), found behind your battery. Enter the user code you would like to add or delete. Select either add or delete. Enter that code again. Press tick.

For more information about this process click here.

Because the Schlage Encode lock has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, it will automatically receive firmware updates as they become available from Schlage if the lock is paired with your home Wi-Fi network and managed by a compatible smart home app.

If you are managing your lock via the Schlage Home app, you may notice a small red dot on the gear/settings icon in the app to notify you as firmware updates become available. You can choose to update the firmware at that time. If no action is taken, the firmware will update automatically.

We recommend using a premium alkaline battery for all Schlage digital locks.

Lithium, or rechargeable technologies may cause undesirable operation. Our smart and electronic locks are equipped with low battery warnings. When presented with this warning, it is best to replace your batteries immediately. Always remember to correctly place your batteries in the correct position, if incorrectly inserted, it could cause the electrolyte to leak from the batteries and damage your digital lock.

The strength of your Wi-Fi signal, as measured by the lock, can affect the battery life of your Schlage Encode™ Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt. To see the strength of the signal reaching your deadbolt, view your Wi-Fi Settings in the Schlage Home app.

Because of its built-in Wi-Fi, the Schlage Encode lock will work to always remain connected to your network. A Wi-Fi signal that is weak or obstructed may cause the lock to frequently search and reconnect with your network, putting a strain on the battery and reducing its life. Battery performance may also be reduced if you turn off your home Wi-Fi and do not disconnect your lock from your network, causing it to continue to search for a signal.

The following may help improve battery life affected by Wi-Fi signal strength:

  • Position your router closer to your lock. Ideally this will also remove any obstacles such as walls or other concrete, brick or metal barriers potentially blocking the signal.

  • Use a Wi-Fi extender to improve the signal strength.

Firstly, take the battery cover off the back of the lock. Press and hold the black circle reset button to the right of the thumb turn on the inside of the lock. This can sometimes be hidden by the thumb turn. The LED will flash red, keep holding the button until the LED stops flashing red (approximately 7 seconds). Next, the LED will change to light blue when the factory reset is complete. It may take up to 10 seconds to complete. Your lock has now been reset.

WARNING: Factory default reset will remove all codes and virtual keys that have been programmed to your lock. These codes cannot be retrieved so be sure you have your default codes available to re-program the lock.

If you’ve received the message in your Schlage Home app that the app could not set up your lock, please verify the following:

  • The Schlage Home app works with the Schlage Encode (BE489) Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt. Verify that you have selected the correct lock to set up with your app.

  • Verify that your lock is in setup mode. Your lock is placed in setup mode when the black circle reset button is pressed and released. The inside LED light should start to blink a slow and continuous blue LED light.

You will also need to make sure you have Bluetooth activated on your smartphone and a compatible Wi-Fi network in your home. For more information on Wi-Fi networks, please go here.

The Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt and Schlage Wi-Fi Bridge (AB100) (bridge used for Schlage Ease Smart Locks) both support a 2.4 GHz network.

The Schlage Home and Abode apps will only list networks that are 2.4 GHz and are WPA or WPA2 password protected. If you do not see your network listed in the app, you may be using a 5 GHz network. Temporarily disable the 5GHz option during setup. Forget the network on the phone and join again.  If you have a hidden network, please enter your Wi-Fi information into the app manually.

One easy way to determine which type of network you are using is to view the list of networks in your smartphone’s settings. If a network is 5 GHz, you will typically see “5 GHz” at the end of that network’s name. The more standard 2.4 GHz network will not have a designation following its name.

You can store up to 100 user codes.

You can use the Schlage Home app to schedule access codes that work only at specific times. Codes can be scheduled to grant access for:

  • a single day

  • certain times of the day on a recurring basis, such as every day from 8-11 a.m

  • certain days of the week on a recurring basis, such as every Wednesday

  • a certain period, such as for the next three weeks or today only from 2-4 p.m

Popular uses for scheduled access codes include granting access to a house cleaner only on the days and times they are expected or allowing a contractor entry for the few weeks a home improvement job is expected to last. You may also schedule a one-time code that enables a trusted friend to drop off your kids.

To schedule an access code with specific access time, log into your Schlage Home app, click on the person icon at the bottom right, click + for a new access, or select from your existing codes set up. Select the ‘Schedule Always’ option and choose between the Always, Recurring or Temporary options.
